About Socks

socks derive their name from a loose-fitting slipper called the 'soccus' in Latin. This was worn by Roman actors, but socks soon evolved to become an integral part of footwear. Socks ensure that the feet are not exposed to harmful elements. They also keep our feet clean and free from infection.

In earlier times, socks were made of animal skin. But, over time, they evolved and were made with leather and woven fabrics. Footwraps, pieces of cloth that are worn wrapped around the feet, were worn with boots before socks became widely available.

They remained in use by armies in Eastern Europe up until the beginning of the 21st century. By A.D. 1000, socks became a symbol of wealth and nobility and six centuries later it evolved into a style statement with an ornamental design adorning the ankle side.　

The invention of knitting machines enhanced the varieties of socks doled out. Socks became available in silk and several other fabrics like nylon, polyester, olefins and acrylic to name a few. Many designers experiment not only with socks made out of unique fabrics but also colours and formats blended in several proportions to add a zing to their appearance.

Today, socks are available in a wide variety of models and designs, crossing a huge spectrum of colour combinations, material and textures. For every occasion, you can find and step forward in socks that suit your style. There are socks made of cotton, wool, hemp models are available for men and women.

Some socks are available for use by both men and women as they are unisex styles. Men might prefer cashmere socks where as women can choose from ankle length socks, over the knee socks or tights depending on their outfit.

Leg warmers are coverings for lower legs, similar to socks but thicker and generally footless. They were originally used by ballet and other dancers in order to keep the leg muscles warm and to prevent cramping or other muscle injuries.

Coloured socks have been an intricate part of Sports uniforms. Sports socks are ankle length socks made of cotton and lycra with an elastic band to hold it in place and give the wearer comfort. Most sports require some sort of socks to protect one's legs from being scraped while participating in sports and games.

Young boys and girls and teenagers prefer socks in bold colours with art work or graffiti prints on them. Some of my personal favorites include socks with off beat designs such as those with a skull and cross bones or rainbow colours. Others might prefer hilarious cartoon characters or stripes to adorn their footwear accessories. kids socks are made of cotton in peppy colors and prints.

Toe socks are knitted so that each toe is individually encased the same way that fingers are in a glove. And there are other socks that have one compartment for the big toe and another for the rest of the toes. Both varieties of toe socks allow one to wear flip-flops.

Socks are available in a variety of lengths. Bare or ankle socks extend to the ankle or lower and are often worn casually or for athletic use. Bare socks are designed to create the look of "bare feet" when worn with shoes. Knee-high socks are sometimes associated with formal dresses or as being part of a uniform, such as in sports or as part of a school's dress code or uniform. Over-the-knee socks or socks that extend over the thigh a.k.a thigh-high socks are garments worn by girls and women, although fashion trends have caused its popularity to vary widely.

Socks are used as a holiday item during the festive season as well. The Christmas stocking is a festive sock hung by a nail and filled with small presents that Santa brings while the kids are asleep on Christmas Eve.
